Star Trek Beyond blasts into theaters on Friday, and we talked with cast members Simon Pegg — he’s also the co-writer — and Karl Urban, along with director Justin Lin to about the latest installment in the iconic sci-fi franchise.

Beyond is the highly anticipated third installment in the popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and rebooted by J.J. Abrams in 2009, establishing a time-travel alternate universe known as the Kelvin Timeline.

Director Justin Lin of The Fast and the Furious franchise is at the helm of the newest epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Beyond opens on Friday, but lucky fans attending San Diego Comic-Con will be treated to a special IMAX premiere with a live orchestra on Wednesday, during the show’s Preview Night.

Reviews for the film are overwhelmingly positive, with many lauding it as a return to classic Trek form, but with an updated style. That’s good news for Trek fans who have had a tough year with Leonard Nimoy’s passing, and most recently the tragic death of Anton Yelchin. Thankfully, Star Trek Beyond is looking more and more like the boost of optimism we all could use. Here’s hoping it delivers on that promise.

The studio certainly seems happy enough with the results, as they’ve already greenlit a fourth Star Trek film which will seemingly get all timey-whimey on us with the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk.
