By now, you better be all kinds of hype for Netflix’s magical new Riverdale companion show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It looks dark and gothic and magical and super badass. The gorgeous cast of Chilling Adventures — Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Miranda Otto, and Michelle Gomez — joined showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa at New York Comic-Con today to spill a tiny bit of tea about what fans can expect from the upcoming October 26 premiere — and that tiny bit of tea was well worth it. Here’s everything we learned.
The Show Is Tonally Similar to the Chilling Adventures Comics
Sabrina herself, Kiernan Shipka, said, “The tone of [the show] is very similar. If you’re a fan [of the comics], you’re immediately going to respond. It’s the same vibe: very dark, very edgy, horrific, alluring, and sexy, all at the same time.” Aguirre-Sacasa, who also penned the comics, added that he thinks “the show is a little more fun.” He also clarified that it’s definitely still a horror show, but “there’s more romance, more warmth.”
Sabrina Herself Is Down for a Riverdale Crossover Episode
Riverdale’s sophomore season prepped us for a supernatural shift in the show and regularly mentioned Greendale, Sabrina’s neighboring hometown, so a crossover seems inevitable. Shipka’s all for it. “I’m a big Riverdale fan,” she gushed, “so selfishly I want a [crossover] episode.”
There Could Be an Episode With the Original Sabrina the Teenage Witch Cast — Including Salem
Shipka was born in 1999, so she didn’t grow up watching ABC’s wildly popular 1996 show Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart — but she did know “the bare bones basics of it” coming into the role. Lucy Davis is a big fan of the ’90s show and was actually scared to take on the role of Aunt Hilda. “I love Caroline Rhea [who plays Hilda in the ’90s series], so I was afraid to fill her shoes.” But Rhea reached out to Davis and has been “so kind” to her about the role.
As far as including the old cast in this new iteration of Sabrina, nothing’s out of the question. “I could [direct message] Melissa Joan Hart!” Shipka joked. Davis suggested that one day all the Chilling Adventures characters could wake up as the original Teenage Witch cast. “[We have to] get the original Salem in,” Aguirre-Sacasa added.
There’s Gonna Be a Witch Orgy This Season
Chance Perdomo, who plays Sabrina’s pansexual warlock cousin Ambrose, shared that there is, in fact, a big ol’ witch orgy this season. Shipka confirmed that the orgy was specifically a witch orgy, no mortals allowed. “That was fun,” Perdomo sighed fondly. Ross Lynch chimed in that he was not invited to the orgy, as his character Harvey Kinkle is tragically mortal. There were precious few details about this orgy, including who from the magical world may or may not be involved (looking at you, Nicholas Scratch), but regardless, we’re hyped.
