Can’t wait for Shadowhunters season two to come out to find out what’s happened with Jace and whether he’s fallen into evil or has other plans up his sexy sleeves? Well, it turns out there’s still a few months before season two comes back, with the premiere date of Jan 2 announced at the Shadowhunters panel at New York Comic Con.

As Emeraude Toubia, who plays Isabelle, said during the panel, “Get ready. This season is going to shock you.” And even though the first few scenes of next year’s first episode only hinted at a few of those surprises, there’s clearly many more twists still to come. And if you’re worried about what happens to Jace, Dominic Sherwood who plays Jace explained, “things get worse for Jace before they get better.” As long as they don’t damage that gorgeous face of his, and things definitely will get better, we can probably handle that.

Think you know what’s coming up because you’ve read the books? Think again. “The guys who read the books, that’s great, that’s going to give a decent basis for what we do in this season,” says Sherwood, “but we changed stuff. There’s stuff that isn’t there in the books and there’s stuff that we’ve added early, and there’s different things going on. We used the books, and Cassie’s world that she created is so fantastic that we’d be idiots to go too far away from that. But there are times when we have to keep it as well as possible for people who have read the books and do know the story and do want a surprise when they watch the show.”

By the looks of things, next season’s battles are going to be bigger and better than ever too. “We’ve all been training so hard,” said Toubia. “Fitness training, and different martial arts with all different weapons to really try and step up our A-games.”

During the panel session, there was just one more surprise for Shadowhunters fans. Showrunner and Executive Producer Darren Swimmer announced that there would be a few guest directors taking the reins for season two. Stitchers star Salli Richardson-Whitfield will be directing an episode, and Paul Wesley, the actor who plays Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, will be picking up episode 16. Although he couldn’t make it to New York Comic Con this year, he left Shadowhunters fans a video message to reveal his news.

Season two of Shadowhunters returns on Jan 2, 2017, on Freeform.
