Lost in Space is Netflix’s latest sci-fi series — a reimagining of the classic ‘60s TV show for today. Set 30 years in the future, the show follows the Robinson family, planning to make a fresh start on a new world at a time when humankind are sending their best and brightest to colonize other planets. But an accident during the mission leaves the would-be colonists lost… in space.

What’s so special about the streaming reboot of this sci-fi classic? The characters. Chief among them Will Robinson, Dr. Smith, and the strange Robot at the center of the much of the show’s mysteries.

Will Robinson

Will (Max Jenkins) is the youngest member of the Robinson family. He’s creative and curious, but also the smallest and weakest of the crew. He was bullied and didn’t have a lot of friends on Earth — making a new adventure on another planet seem even more appealing.

Will struggles with panic attacks, and doesn’t want to be the one who lets his family down. And when the family’s ship crashes, Will has to find the courage he never thought he had. In the end, he could be the key to everyone’s survival.

Dr. Smith

A mysterious woman and an enigmatic x-factor, Dr. Smith (played by Parker Posey) is part villain, part anti-hero. A compelling, charismatic and treacherous character, Smith is a stowaway and possibly even a saboteur — she’s definitely a born trouble-maker.

Oddly, Smith is unnervingly calm during the disaster that results in everyone becoming lost in space. Stranded along with Don West and the Robinson family, she’s a master manipulator, always working one side against the other, thinking three moves ahead to achieve her mysterious ends.

Robot

A sentient machine made of shapeshifting alien metal, the intimidating Robot forms a surprising bond with Will Robinson and becomes his loyal friend. Robot towers over planet’s human inhabitants, but — like many of them — he’s the source of strange mysteries yet to be revealed.

When it came to imagining the concept and design of the Robot, the behind-the-scenes team was committed to creating a robot like none other before. And for the writers, Robot is inspired by the relationships between children and animals or aliens depicted in movies over the years — think Black Stallion or E.T.

All episodes of Lost in Space are now streaming, only on Netflix.
