WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the film ‘Moon’.

At the end of Duncan Jones’s breakthrough debut, lo-fi sci-fi Moon, the younger clone of Sam Rockwell’s character, Sam Bell, sets his sights on reaching earth. If you remember, after the older clone and newly-activated clone meet on their lunar outpost and learn the truth about their situation, they cook up a plan to get the younger version to earth.

The craft he’s on arrives, and via news reports, we learn that his testimony against Lunar Industries — the company which manufactures the Sam Bell clones — and their questionable operations have had a negative impact on the value of the corporation’s stock.

But with rumours of the character making an appearance in Duncan Jones’s upcoming Mute, FANDOM asked Sam Rockwell about the fate of Sam Bell.

Speaking at the press junket for his latest film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Rockwell said, “It seems like he’s going back to earth and hopefully he’ll find a life of some kind.”

Intriguingly, he added, “Maybe some other clones can get there too.”

Could Clone Sam Bell Meet Original Sam Bell?

The original Sam Bell, on whom all the clones were based, was still alive in Moon and Rockwell thinks it’s possible that the Sam Bell clones could hunt him down.

“I think we’re all kind of mad at him, a little upset with him,” he said before describing what they might do were they to come face-to-face with him.

“Yell at him; read him the riot act,” Rockwell said.

Whether we find out in Mute or not remains to be seen, but Moon fans would no doubt relish the opportunity to learn what happens next in the story of Sam Bell.

Jones has referred to Mute as a “spiritual sequel” to 2009’s Moon. It’s a sci-fi mystery thriller revolving around a mute bartender named Leo Beiler, played by Alexander Skarsgård, whose girlfriend disappears. Set in Berlin, the action takes place 40 years in the future, 11 years after the events of Moon. Jones is also planning a third film in the same universe.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, meanwhile, hits screens in the US on November 10, 2017 and in the UK on January 12, 2018.
