What is ‘Zootopia’?

Disney’s Zootopia arrives this weekend upon a wave of acclaim and promotion. The film tells the story of young Judy Hopps , a rabbit who heads to the big city of Zootopia after being accepted into the police department. In the film animals have put aside their differences and instincts in order to have a functioning civilization. Of course there are still exceptions to the rule who don’t fit into easy boxes, one such creature being Nick Wilde. Wilde is a fox who is a bit of a con artist and Judy already has a fear of the species due to a childhood incident, but as stories like this often go, looks can be deceiving.

A gigantic mystery falls right into their laps and it sets in motion a chain of events that allows the film to adhere to a much more traditional structure more common to police procedurals and adult dramas and it pays off in spades. Zootopia is a next-level animated movie that cuts no corners and shows a respect for every member of its audience’s ability to follow the plot.

It’s a must see film and the introduction to a cast of characters we’ll be seeing again.
