The first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has arrived – and it looks like a more broadly humorous affair than the original 1995 film starring Robin Williams.

In this brand new adventure, which comes 22 years after the original, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are welcomed to the jungle as four high-school kids taking detention discover a dusty old video game in their school basement.

They are magically transported into the game – just like in the 1995 film and forced to use their wits and other skills for survival, coming up against the likes of rhinos, hippos, cheetahs, puzzles and other jungle pitfalls. Each becomes the avatar they create – with the most hilarious transformation being pampered princess Bethany morphing into Jack Black’s tubby middle-aged professor.

Look closely, and you’ll also spot Nick Jonas in the trailer. The film also stars Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner and Ser’Darius Blain and features appearances from Missi Pyle and Bobby Cannavale as well as Flight of the Conchords’ Rhys Darby and TV movie king, Tim Matheson.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is directed by Jake Kasdan, who helmed Sex Tape and Bad Teacher, and is released in the US on December 20 and the UK on December 26.

Official Synopsis

In a brand new Jumanji adventure, four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves – or they’ll be stuck in the game forever.
