How ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ Should End

Season 8, the end of Voltron: Legendary Defender, is coming, and we’re not ready for it. The story of Voltron is one of the most well-crafted stories out there. It has taken us on as wild of a ride as Team Voltron had the first time they flew the Blue Lion, and we’re all the better for it.

Executive producers Lauren Montgomery and Joaquim Dos Santos said last month at San Diego Comic-Con that they wanted to end the show on the “highest note possible.” We don’t know what the future holds for Season 8, but with that quote in mind, we have some ideas as to what it should have.

The Heart of Voltron

Haggar comes to grips with past memories
Season 8 has a chance to really explore Haggar's story.

Voltron‘s focus has always been on its story, and that should be no different for Season 8. Season 7 seems to have set up the big mystery for the final season with the Altean we saw at the very end. That Altean calls attention to two storylines that need to wrap up: Haggar and the Altean colony.

We get virtually nothing about Haggar in Season 7. During the three years that Voltron was missing, it seems like she went into hiding, which is why Season 8 needs to put a spotlight on her. It should explore her story and motives in depth as well as the internal conflict she’s been facing in recent seasons.

She’s been getting long-lost memories back, particularly about her son, Lotor. It’s taken her from an evil witch to someone struggling with new maternal feelings. When the two of them last met, Haggar revealed that she was Honerva, the woman that Lotor always knew was his mother. He refused to accept her as such, and it seemed to break her heart. That was the last we actually saw her.

Haggar changes back into Honerva.
Has Haggar embraced her transformation back into Honerva?

In Season 8, Haggar’s story should come full circle. She started out as Honerva, the scientist who studied the rift on Daibazaal and married Zarkon. Quintessence turned her into the witch Haggar. Now it almost seems like she wants to get her previous life as Honerva back, or what she can.

She wants that family bond again, now with Lotor. And to get that, she needs to rescue Lotor from the quintessence field. Her storyline shouldn’t necessarily be a redemption arc, but rather Voltron showcasing the power of a bond, even on the evil side of the fight. It should make us consider how the Galra war has affected everyone. And we are so here for that.

The Return of Altea

Alteans arriving at their new colony
Let's see Team Voltron save these Alteans.

On the flip side of things, Season 8 should also wrap up the Altean colony’s storyline. Created by Lotor, we found out that the colony’s facility was empty when the Blade of Marmora investigated it in Season 7. More likely than not, Haggar took this colony.

While it’s hard to say how she’ll use the colony, there’s one thing that’s clear: we want to see the Alteans rescued. We want Team Voltron to face Haggar in an epic battle, and we want to see them save the Alteans. In Season 1, we learned from Allura and Coran that Zarkon destroyed Altea long ago. It’s only fitting that we should see them reunite with their people and start to rebuild Altea, at least as a civilization.

Aside from the major mysteries, Season 8 should take care of any loose threads. We need to know that Team Voltron carried out its mission of defending the universe. Keith killed Sendak in Season 7, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other Galra warlords out there to defeat. At the end of the day, the team should have that sense of victory — that they did indeed save the universe.

Make Way for the Future

The MFE fighter pilots could become the next generation of Paladins.

While Voltron should wrap things up, it should also leave room for potential spin-offs and expansion media. By that, we mean possible new series, graphic novels and comics, and even video games. There’s already several comics and a virtual reality game out there that provide more adventures for the team. There’s no reason those should stop because this series ends.

The ideas for these spin-offs are endless. The producers have said that they would love to see novels about the Blade of Marmora and the Galaxy Garrison. Novels about the Voltron Coalition or the original Paladins would also be cool ideas.

Season 8 itself could leave a secondary storyline on a cliffhanger that leads directly into a new comic or even a live-action film. In particular, keep an eye out for a new generation of Paladins for Voltron being introduced. Voltron may have saved the universe, but a defender is always needed to keep the peace.

We Had a Lot of Bonding Moments

Team Voltron bonding
Voltron brought the Paladins together as friends.

Season 8 of Voltron should give us time to reflect on the characters, especially the main team, and on their relationships both with each other and their families. The series hasn’t really been about romantic relationships at its core, but should any develop in the last season, that’s okay.

But more so, it should focus on the bond Team Voltron has created with each other. One of the show’s central themes is unity, and that should be featured all through the end. This team came together as Paladins because of some “messed-up coincidences,” and in the end, they became more than friends. They became a family.

Above all else, Voltron should stay true to itself in Season 8. If it does that, then we should see one of the greatest finales of all time. We should get to celebrate the universe’s freedom.

Let’s see Team Voltron come together once more and reflect on everything that’s happened. Let’s hear, “Form Voltron!” one last time and experience the epic conclusion of an incredible, detailed story. Here’s to a satisfying end of a wild space adventure we all came along for.
