‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’: Could Lotor Be Resurrected?

The Season 6 finale of Voltron: Legendary Defender saw the sacrifice of the Castle of Lions, the return of the real Shiro, and one particularly pivotal moment — the end of Lotor. Team Voltron defeated Lotor in an onslaught of quintessence thanks to Allura’s powers. This left him stranded in his Sincline Voltron in the quintessence field, presumably dead, as the Paladins escaped. But is Lotor really dead? All evidence points to possibly not.

Can It Be Done?

Zarkon coming back to life by way of quintessence

As Allura states several times during the finale, Lotor turned out to be evil just like his father, Zarkon. Lotor, like Zarkon in the past, used and betrayed the Paladins to get to the quintessence field to satisfy his need for power. Yet once there, the exposure to all that quintessence corrupted both father and son. Zarkon died because of this exposure, but the energy of the quintessence resurrected him later after he’d been rescued from the field, creating the monster we’ve come to know. If Lotor also died by a quintessence overdose, then he could also come back to life in a similar way.

The other thing to note is Team Voltron’s dialogue after their battle with Lotor. Most of the team wants to leave the quintessence field after defeating Lotor, but Allura insists that they “can’t just leave him.” When Keith says, “Lotor’s made his choice,” they leave. The fact that they considered grabbing him implies they think he can be saved later. It’s possible that he isn’t completely dead yet. Unfortunately, we don’t see Lotor again after his defeat, which makes his current status unknown. Pair this observation with the manner of Zarkon’s revival, and it becomes clear that Lotor could come back to life.

A Way Out: Escape or Rescue?

Voltron creating a rift into the quintessence field

There are two major things that need to happen for Lotor’s resurrection. The first is that he needs to get out of the quintessence field somehow. Voltron was able to create a rift in the field using its sword and Allura’s powers. If Lotor manages to wake up on his own and is aware enough to think of it, then his Sincline Voltron should be more than capable of getting him out. It has two swords, is infused with Allura’s powers, and is surrounded by unlimited quintessence in the field. If that can’t create another rift to get out, then nothing can.

The other way Lotor could get out is if Haggar finds out about his situation and decides to rescue him. The only likely way she would find out is if Lotor’s generals tell her what happened, assuming they stuck around to watch the battle after he ditched them. If Haggar does go after him, then her success depends on her new alchemic powers from Oriande and her vast knowledge of quintessence and the rift from her studies as Honerva. If Allura can create a rift with her powers, then so can Haggar.

The Magical Powers That Be

The other thing we need to consider is how Lotor would be resurrected. Of course, he could be revived in the same way as his father. Zarkon was corrupted with so much quintessence that its energy brought him back to life. Voltron arguably hit Lotor with a whole lot more quintessence, so this option is very likely, regardless of whether he’s in or out of the field.

The second option is, once again, Haggar’s powers. Allura and Haggar learned the same powers in Oriande, and we’ve seen Allura revive both Lance and Shiro since then. So if Haggar does get Lotor out of the rift, she could use this same power to revive him. The only question is, would she want something from him in return?

If Lotor were to escape the quintessence field and survive, there’s no telling what he would do next. Would he still try to carry out his original plan of obtaining unlimited quintessence, especially now that he has his own Voltron? Would he become a relentless emperor like Zarkon before him? Or would he become fully corrupted and hunt down Team Voltron to end them? Only time will tell, but just remember, it’s all a distinct possibility.
