Sony is not taking any chances with their new version of Spider-Man. After the disastrous response to the Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony is taking all the help they can get from Marvel. Today’s news certainly solidifies that.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Robert Downey Jr. will be joining the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first film in Sony’s MCU Spider-Man series. It’s been established that Spidey is Team Iron Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, so it stands to reason that he and Tony will be best buds. Peter’s love of science makes his admiration of Tony all too believable, and it will be exciting to see how Stark influences and aids this juvenile do-gooder.

Is It a Good Idea?

In the bigger picture, it’s just great to know that we’ll be getting more Tony Stark. RDJ has been doing this MCU thing longer than anyone else in the game, and it’s likely that he won’t be around forever. He’s already shot down rumors of an Iron Man 4, so we need to enjoy all the Tony we’re going to get. His appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming bodes well for his fate in Captain America: Civil War, but how much longer will Tony be around?

At least we’ll get to see these two science nerds bounce off each other for more than one movie. It will be interesting to see how much involvement Tony takes in crafting the new Spidey suit. It’s already been established that Spidey is doing his own thing in Captain America: Civil War when Tony finds him and recruits him to the cause, so what kind of improvements Spidey’s suit gets thanks to Tony’s tech will be a joy to see.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters July 7, 2017. We’ll get our first glimpse of an Iron Man/Spidey team-up when Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6.
