It was recently announced that Jeff Goldblum will be playing The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok. Not many people know much about this character and the assumption typically is that these kind of villains are mostly filler and not all that important. This time, that concept doesn’t apply. The Grandmaster is a very important character and is a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s have a look at some early rumors and possible plots for Thor: Ragnarok.

The Grandmaster

This guy is so old his galaxy doesn’t even exist anymore. The Grandmaster is the last survivor of his kind and one of the earliest beings in the universe. He has been listed as one of the “Elders of the Universe” due to being virtually immortal and is able to resurrect most life while capable of traveling space and time.

This elder has spent his life studying and playing games to a point of mastery. Challenging opponents to high-risk contests and tournaments, while using warriors from different timelines and dimensions as pawns. This has made the Grandmaster a very dangerous Elder for the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Age of Ultron

Thor’s vision in Age of Ultron has set him on a path upon the Infinity Stones. The Infinity Stones are six powerful gems with unique functions. At the end of Ultron, Thor states The Mind Stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the past few years, it is not a coincidence. Someone has been playing an intricate game to make pawns of us. Captain America replies by asking if Thor can find out what’s coming. Since it’s official that Goldblum will be playing the Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok there is no doubt that Thor’s comment was directed at this character known for playing games and makes pawns of people.

Avengers

Guardians of the Galaxy

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a blockbuster starring an all-star team of MCU characters. Every Marvel film since the first Iron Man has been setting up for this. It is probable that Thor: Ragnarok is the key to bringing them into one film.

It is unknown on how the MCU will portray Goldblum’s character and how his abilities will work. Having the power of traveling time and dimension is almost impossible to defeat. It is a theory that he gains these abilities from the Time Stone, which has not appeared in the MCU yet.

The Grandmaster is not the only Elder of the Universe in the MCU. Benicio del Toro’s role as The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy is on that list as well. The Elders consider themselves as “brothers” so there is a chance they may both appear in Thor: Ragnarok. In the comics, the Grandmaster lost one of the infinity Stones to Thanos. Thanos is a cosmic warlord who has appeared in the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. He will also be the main antagonist in Avengers: Infinity War.

Daredevil

In the comics, Grandmaster has used Daredevil and the Defenders as pawns in a game for control of Earth. Grandmaster lost a bet with the “Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”, causing him to surrender control of Earth. This storyline leaves a gateway open for Marvel Studios to connect the Netflix series with the blockbuster franchises.

Planet Hulk

Since the Hulk will have a part in Ragnarok, there is a good chance that we’ll see a clash between the God of Thunder and the Green Goliath. There have also been rumors that Hulk will have Gladiator armor. Marvel Studios will be adapting the Planet Hulk storyline to the film. The Hulk is uncontrollable and highly dangerous. For the protection of Earth, Iron Man sends the Hulk on a mission in space but is really being sent to a peaceful planet. Accidently, Hulk’s ship travels through a wormhole sending him to a world with a corrupt empire. The Hulk soon becomes a slave and is forced into gladiator battles.

In Age of Ultron, the Hulk was last seen drifting on a plan. Unknown to where he was heading, it leaves the possibility for him to travel in space or to be captured due to the scheming of the Grandmaster.

What’s It All Mean?

The Grandmaster is a game changer for the MCU. Based on the lore of Marvel Comics, it makes sense for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to connect into one, due to the efforts of the Grandmaster. It is likely that Thor will answer Captain America’s question in Ragnarok, finding out that the Infinity War is coming. Thor: Ragnarok could set up the bridge for the Guardians of the Galaxy to meet up with the Avengers. In addition, a new version of the Hulk will be brought to the big screen. Now that the Grandmaster is in play, possibilities are endless for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
