Last week Nintendo announced that the quirky, cult-followed Japanese role-playing game The World Ends With You will be released on the Switch. But this version of TWEWY isn’t a simple port: it’s the entire game from 2007 with new content, including an epilogue that will answer some of the game’s biggest lingering questions — The World Ends With You Final Remix.

The game follows a group of teenagers who die and are forced to participate in a game to save their very existence. This game plays out across the city of Shibuya, a pop-culture destination in Tokyo, and those who win it get the chance to be resurrected and return the living world.

But what exactly can we expect from this new version of TWEWY? What have we been waiting for all this time? Well, it may have something to do with this piece of character art, revealed with the launch of TWEWY on mobile in 2012.

The mysterious artwork.

The artwork above shows the 109 shopping building in Shibuya — a central landmark in TWEWY — as well as a new character. This character has been named “Hype-chan” by fans, and she is holding what looks like Shiki‘s stuffed cat, Mr. Mew. Is it possible “Hype-chan” is connected to Shiki in some way? Perhaps a family member? Her clothing color and accessories are reminiscent of clothing worn by other characters — perhaps she is somehow connected to all of them?

Additionally, Final Remix will include a new scenario that “gets to the heat of the story.” Based on the above first look, that scenario looks to prominently feature “Hype-chan” and two other mysterious figures — one of them a Reaper, the black-clad figures who run the death game.

That mysterious figure is actually Coco Atarashi, a character introduced in the 2012 mobile game. Coco is a Reaper, and in the social networking multiplayer version of The World Ends With You, she guided the players through the tutorial. Players could interact with her but she didn’t play a significant role in the story, nor was much revealed about her job as a Reaper and what her powers are. Perhaps Final Remix will finally answer these questions and share more about her character.

We’ll finally know the end of the tale of Shibuya’s Reapers when The World Ends With You Final Remix launches on Nintendo Switch on later this year.
