A clip from Season 8 of The Walking Dead just dropped at New York Comic Con and it did not disappoint.

At a panel for the series featuring cast members, series producers and creator Robert Kirkman, show boss Greg Nicotero announced the clip.

He said, “One thing you’ll notice about this clip is the 100th episode is full of a lot of tributes to previous scenes that we’ve shot through the first seven seasons. So the clip, if you’re an eagle-eyed viewer, you will recognise as a shot-for-shot recreation as something that is very familiar to you guys.”

The scene it harks back to is the sequence in which Rick Grimes makes his very first walker kill. Remember the Teddy Bear Walker from the very first episode?

As Carl pulls up in a van alone on a highway, and begins to explore his surroundings, there are so many moments that echo that memorable encounter his father Rick had with the little girl zombie. The eerie silence, the upturned car, the truck on its side, the petrol can. And so on.

But instead of meeting a walker, Carl comes across a man who is keeping himself concealed while addressing him. He’s talking about being shot at and having a microwave thrown at him. He mentions his mum and what she used to say about helping the traveller, and giving whatever you have.

“My mom says that helping the traveller, a person without a home, that’s everything,” he says.

He says he gets that Carl probably doesn’t trust him. And then he quotes the Quran. Carl crouches down and sees the guy’s legs before running towards him with his gun raised, demanding: “Hands up”.

During the panel, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman also finally confirmed that The Walking Dead would cross over with sister show Fear the Walking Dead, saying that one character will go from one show and appear in the other show. He didn’t say when fans might see this.

The AMC zombie drama reaches its milestone 100th episode when the show returns.

The Walking Dead Season 8 premieres on October 22, 2017.
