SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from Season 8, Episode 7 of The Walking Dead, entitled “Time for After.” Proceed with caution.

I’m going to be cliche for a minute and say that great art comes from pain. — Kanye West

Every artist needs inspiration. If great art comes from pain, what better time than the zombie apocalypse to pick up some art supplies and find a passion project. All of our heroes and foes are artists in their own way, and their creations are beginning to sculpt the most important plot lines in The Walking Dead.

In the Walking Dead Season 8 premiere, Mercy, Rick Grimes took up photography. In the opening scene of Season 8 Episode 6, “The King, The Widow, and Rick“, we learned Jadis is a sculptor who works in the almost-nude. Both Jadis and Rick are creative leaders and they need each other. Rick needs Jadis to lead her tribe, the junkyard-dwelling Scavengers, away from the Saviors. Jadis knows that with her numbers comes leverage (despite the fact that nobody can understand anything she says). Season 8 Episode 7, “Time for After“, picks up exactly where Episode 6 left off, and it starts with a similar theme. Jadis is holding Rick as a prisoner, but this time he’s the one who’s naked. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the most creative characters are the ones who will steer the entire story and Twitter can’t get enough of them.

Rick Pics

Turns out Jadis The Sculptor has a creative process, and NSFW nudes are her specialty. Like many sculptors, she likes to photograph her subject matter first.

Found Objects

Found object art is all the rage. Rick’s Polaroid was Twitter’s obsession at the beginning of Season 8. Looks like Jadis found a functional Kodak Brownie camera, with a working flash, and film.

Dwight Carves A Future

At the end of Season 7, and through all-out war during Season 8, Dwight’s wooden carvings have been used to pass messages. Although he ranks high among The Saviors as one of Negan’s top soldiers, he’s secretly working with Alexandria and The Hilltop. Dwight is still the most important character on The Walking Dead, and now he’s a fan favorite. Next to Eugene Porter, Dwight seems reliable, trustworthy and focused.

Collaborative Art

The most common way for an artist to collaborate is with other artists. After battling another one of Jadis’s trash zombies, Rick proves himself worthy. He is no longer just subject matter, posing for her next museum piece. The two make a deal to work together, but Rick is totally over Jadis’s creative process, and so is Twitter.

Martial Arts

Jadis held Rick as her temporary naked prisoner and sexually harassed him, but Richonne is forever. Michonne is a creative warrior and she paints with a very big sword.

During all-out war, some characters (ahem, Daryl and Tara) have become obsessed with revenge. Blinded by vengeance, their lack of creativity has lead to a failure in reaching their goals. Will Michonne become obsessed with revenge to defend her man Rick, or will she remain a martial artist? Dwight had a chance to shoot Eugene, but didn’t do it. He may be the new fan favorite, but can he be trusted? What’s up with the nudity theme this season?
