In Valkyria Chronicles, the player takes the role of Welkin Gunther, a newly recruited lieutenant and tank commander of the Gallian militia. After his small country is invaded by the powerful Empire, Welken must lead his squad of rag-tag soldiers to push the invaders out of his homeland. A major gameplay feature involves recruiting and deploying these soldiers on the battlefield. Many of them have their own strengths, weaknesses, and quirks that make them easy to grow fond of.
To celebrate the release of Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic soldiers of Squad 7. These members are famous (or infamous) for their personalities and battle capabilities. Be sure to visit your barracks and recruit these characters if you see them. Chances are, they will make a big impact in your victories!
Ted Ustinov is a sixteen year old Squad 7 scout. He’s widely considered to be the class clown of Squad 7 and loves nothing more than to make people laugh. His ultimate dream is to become a clown and start his own comedy troupe. Ted’s quotes on the battlefield are joke-oriented, even when things get dicey. Ted’s battle potential grants him bonus defense when he is spotted by multiple enemies. He is highly allergic to most metals, though, so be sure to keep him out of industrial battlefields.
Ted gets along best with Meville, Nancy, and Cherry so keeping them close to him will allow this comedian to knock out even the toughest of crowds.
Jane Turner is a twenty-seven year old Squad 7 shocktrooper. Before the war, she owned her own flower shop in Bruhl that was destroyed by the Imperial invasion. Since then, she’s fostered a deep hatred for the Empire. Nothing brings her more joy than slaying Imperial soldiers. Her battle potential increases her anti-personnel attack power after attacking an enemy. Jane is extremely lethal on the battlefield, her bloodthirsty nature and joy of killing Imperials make her the perfect shocktrooper in situations where Squad 7 is vastly outnumbered.
After the war, Jane stays in the military and becomes an assistant drill sergeant. Recruits would give her the nickname “Sadistic Jane”.
Edy Nelson is a seventeen year old Squad 7 shocktrooper. She is a self-proclaimed actress who grew up in a small rural town. Edy has been the center of attention ever since she was a little girl, which caused her to grow into a self-absorbed and demanding individual with delusions of being a pop idol. She develops a strong rivalry with Rosie, who she considers competition in her dream to become a star. Edy’s battle potential grants her increased accuracy when fighting in the countryside, and increased defensive power when allies are nearby.
Jann Walker is a twenty-seven year old Squad 7 lancer. A mother hen by nature, he worked as a babysitter before enlisting in the Galian militia. Since then, he’s busted himself preparing meals and baking treats for his crush, Largo. Jann loves muscles and anything muscular, including his own physique. Based on his external appearance, most of his squadmates are surprised to find he has a very delicate personality. Jann’s battle potentials grant him increased accuracy when around other men, and a significant boost in attack power if Largo is nearby.
Jann’s English voice actor is none other than John Dimaggio, famous for his roles of Jake the Dog in Adventure Time and Bender in Futurama.
Marina Wulfstan is a twenty four year old Squad 7 sniper. Her strong self reliance and beauty have made her a frequent crush of other Squad 7 members. Her incredible marksmanship was taught to her by her father on hunting expeditions. Despite her lethality, she has a soft spot for cute animals such as Hans. Her character skills grant her increased vision during nighttime operations and bonus evasion when she is alone on the battlefield. Marina is best utilized as a solitary sniper, camped out away from other squadmates providing long-range support.
In addition to being the most accurate Squad 7 sniper, she is also the most popular Valkyria Chronicles character in the West and was featured in the downloadable content Edy’s Detachment.
Vyse, Aika, and Fina
For fans of the cult classic Dreamcast RPG Skies of Arcadia, cameos of the game’s trio Vyse, Aika, and Fina come as a wonderful surprise. In Valkyria Chronicles, Vyse is a shocktrooper, Aika is a scout, and Fina is a medic for Squad 7. All three hail from a ‘far away land’ and are outsiders to the Gallian conflict, but their dedication to helping others leads them to take part in the war effort. Vyse’s iron will grants him additional firepower and accuracy when surrounded by other Gallians. Aika’s versatility grants her increased defense when her AP is half-full. Fina is utilized as the squad’s medic, and will save any unconscious ally from death as long as a squadmate reaches them within 3 turns. Vyse and Aikia are at their best when together as a duo. Send them to the front lines and let them lead the first wave.
When the conflict concludes, all three leave the country to parts unknown, embarking on a new adventure. Maybe their exploits will lead to a Skies of Arcadia sequel someday?
Homer Peron is a fifteen year old Squad 7 engineer. Despite being rather sickly and somewhat physically frail, he willingly volunteered into the militia. Homer has an unusual trait that causes him to feel blissful joy in the most dire of circumstances. When recruited into Squad 7, he mentions his desire to fight until he dies on the battlefield. If you remove him from your squad, he expresses clear disappointment that he wasn’t able to accomplish this feat. Homer’s battle potential gives him an increase in defense when his HP is below half.
