SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the season 5 premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fans at the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at New York Comic Con caught a sneak peek at the first 20 minutes of Episode 1 of Season 5. And we were also there to see it.

Fans have praised Season 4 for being the best yet and Season 5 looks set to raise the game even further if this first look is anything to go by.

The series return promises mysterious alien creatures and amazing special effects, including a brilliantly realised gravity storm. In our first glimpse of the new season, one by one and under strange circumstances, the S.H.I.E.L.D team is transported to a space station.

First, it’s Coulson who gets transported. He discovers men in suspended animation aboard the spacecraft that he’s materialised on, and there’s a huge tear in the side of the structure. As gravity and time seem to get back in sync, everyone on board is sucked towards the hole.

When all calms down, Coulson gets chatting to one of the men who says his name is Virgil. He seems in awe of Coulson, knows who he is and thinks he’s come to save them. In fact, he knows the entire team.

At this point, Ghost Rider announces his arrival in dramatic fashion. Then Yo-Yo appears, followed by a masked Simmons, which causes its own problems.

Now that the team has reunited on the mysterious spacecraft, they discover dehydrated bodies that appear to have been locked in. But who are they and who locked them in? That’s what Coulson wants to know.

When no one’s looking, a Star-Lord looking dude floats in through the aperture — it’s the same guy who grabs May as the clip ends, saying, “I’ve been looking for you.”

Ah, May. She arrives separately from the others and gets herself into a bit of pickle. This leads to a truly stomach-churning escape from her predicament.

Back to Virgil, and the rest of the team. He tells them that he’s been studying them for years, and that he always believed the prophesy that they would come to save humanity. At this point, it gets insane and Quake finally shows up. As Chloe Bennet who plays Quake — otherwise known as Daisy Johnson — said in an interview ahead of the panel: “S–t gets cray in space, yo.” She’s not wrong.

The one character who is conspicuous by his absence is Fitz — who wasn’t on the list. What he’s doing and how he fits in, we can’t wait to find out.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait until the new season airs, but, thankfully, Marvel boss Jeph Loeb also announced the date of the show’s return during the New York Comic Con panel.

Mark your calendars, Agents fans, because the Season 5 premiere date is set to air on December 1 at 8pm on ABC. Jeph Loeb also confirmed at the panel that the return of the Marvel series would be a two-hour special.
