It’s one of the most famous — and sad — scenes in sci-fi film history: The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) lowering himself into a vat of molten steel at the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day to ensure the future he is sent from doesn’t occur. The look on John Connor’s (Edward Furlong) face knowing that his friend will not “be back” is gut-wrenching. And Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) knowing that it’s finally over (at least until the 2003 sequel).
In celebration of T2’s release in 4k, Schwarzenegger, Furlong, and director James Cameron all reflected on the film’s finale, in a clip fans can watch on FANDOM exclusively.
“That scene was really hard for me like ‘How am I going to cry,'” Furlong reminisced about the scene, where his cries punctuate Brad Fiedel’s soundtrack.
“My challenge to myself as a filmmaker, is to see if I can get the audience to cry when the Terminator dies,” Cameron reflected. To have the go full circle — from fearing the cyborg killer in the first film to sympathizing with him in the second — was no easy task. But the payoff was worth it.
“That’s what movies are all about,” Cameron said. “That’s cinema.”
Star Schwarzenegger agreed. “It became this unbelievable emotional moment,” the action star declared. Relive it below.
Hopefully, Cameron and Schwarzenegger will rekindle those emotions when they re-team for the sixth film, coming 2019.
Cameron will produce, with Deadpool director Tim Miller at the helm. Linda Hamilton will reprise her role as Sarah Connor, Cameron revealed last September, while Schwarzenegger is rumored to play a human character that the Terminators were modeled after. There’s been no word on if John Connor will appear in the movie, or which actor will be portraying him.
