Other Surfer Movies You Should Be Watching

Blake Lively, whom you may remember as Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl, will appear in the upcoming thriller The Shallows. The movies premise is every surfer’s nightmare. Nancy is stranded on a rock just yards away from shore. Having survived a shark attack, she must figure out a way to get to safety without being eaten alive.

Lively’s character may be going through hell in this movie, but that doesn’t apply to all surfing movies. Here are a few surfer movies that we think you should be watching. You never know…one of these may inspire you to take up the sport!

Gidget (1959)

Gidget is a coming of age movie that was way ahead of its time. It has a rebellious teenage protagonist who’s way more interested in learning how to surf than chasing boys. You may recognize actress Sandra Dee from her role in the movie Imitation of Life (1959).

Point Break (1991)

Point Break is an action film about an undercover FBI agent posing as a surfer. Johnny Utah makes friends with a group that he suspects are responsible for a string of bank robberies. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in one movie…I’m pretty sure you can die from overexposure to hotness.

Blue Crush (2002)

Blue Crush is a romance drama about Anne Chadwick who dreams of surfing the North Shore. As she trains for an upcoming competition she starts to fall for one of her surf students, Matt. This movie is based on the article”Life’s Swell” by Susan Orlean.

Teen Beach 2 (2015)

Teen Beach 2 is a fun family musical and is the sequel to Teen Beach Movie. Mack and Brady receive a surprise visit from the fictional cast of Wet Side Story. The couple must convince the characters to go back to their movie world before they and the film disappear all together. Okay…so there is very little surfing in this movie BUT the elaborate dance numbers and catchy songs totally makes up for it.

The Shallows premieres in theaters on June 24th.
