Even after 13 years on the air, Supernatural is still managing to shock and excite its loyal audience.

Last season ended with Dean Winchester’s body being taken over by the apocalypse world archangel Michael, marking the first time that Jensen Ackles gets to play a character that’s not just a variation of Dean.

The actor said that he quickly realized this was uncharted territory for his character and the show, adding that although he was a little nervous, he’s gotten more positive feedback about his portrayal of Michael than he’s received in the past 13 years.

The positive reactions to his performance grew even more at Sunday’s Supernatural Comic-Con panel, where lucky fans got to see a sneak preview of Ackles as Michael in an intense scene.

It was instantly clear that the actor is giving viewers a totally different performance as the archangel, managing to be both creepy and charming in the panel preview.

The eerie scene shows Michael interrogating a man about what it is that humans want. When the man answers that he just wants peace, Michael responds, “Humans don’t want peace and love. If they did, the world wouldn’t be the world.”

The cast actually saw the clip for the first time right along with the Comic-Con audience, and they were just as impressed with what they saw.

“I kind of got chills,” said Jared Padalecki, who plays Dean’s brother, Sam, on the show. “Way to go, Ackles.”

Ackles and Padalecki then gave the fans a hint at how the brothers’ roles will change over the course of Season 14 now that Michael is involved.

“Dean’s kind of shotgun right now while Michael is driving,” Ackles said. “It was a little challenging because normally we come back from having a break and you kick the dust off … To do it while playing someone different is a little more challenging than anticipated. But I get to have some cool scenes with cool people.”

“I feel like Sam this year has taken on more of a leadership role,” Padalecki explained about his character. “His brother’s not around. He hasn’t shaved in a little bit.”

“All these people he never met, they’re under his watchful eye,” he added. “Sam needs to take the cues and lessons he learned from Dean as he deals with the Apocalypse World hunters. It’s like the new Brady Bunch.”

Check out some fan footage from the panel in the tweets below, and tune into Season 14 of Supernatural on October 11 on the CW.

Supernatural Season 14 premieres on October 11, 2018.
