‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer: Being Bad Never Looked This Good

After Warner Bros. first teased its upcoming Suicide Squad at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans were ravenous for another look at the villainous supergroup in action. Tonight Warner delivered the goods. Check out the amazing trailer:

I’m nearly speechless. It’s a bold move to use such an iconic song as “Bohemian Rhapsody” to sell your madcap supervillain movie, but it paid off in spades. DC is playing a big game of counter-programming against Marvel with such an idiosyncratic tone and style, and for my money it’s working like gangbusters. I was optimistically curious about Suicide Squad before, but now I’m ridiculously pumped for this.

So many great things to talk about! Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is now poised to be the breakout character of 2016. Her two big laughs in this trailer land flawlessly, and this is coming from someone who was very dismissive of this iteration of Harley. In this one trailer, Robbie has won me over.

Jared Leto’s Joker will still be a big dividing line for some people, but I’m starting to jive with writer/director David Ayer’s version of the character. Most importantly, this is a comic book film that feels like the product of its filmmaker. Marvel catches some guff for having a “house style” due to the role Kevin Feige plays in the MCU films, but that cannot be said about Suicide Squad. This is a David Ayer film through and through, and that should be reason enough to get jazzed about this.

And there’s lots of demented quirkiness all over this thing! Prepare for your local Hot Topic to be inundated with Suicide Squad merch. Regardless, this trailer does sell the movie as something way more fun and zany than the original sneak peek. A skull-face tattoo guy is shooting fire out of his hands! Killer Croc is looking crazy Killer Croc-y! And we haven’t even mentioned that the dependably entertaining Will Smith is in this as Deadshot!

Though the anticipation for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice still feels full of trepidation at this point, Suicide Squad looks like a guaranteed blast. August 5th can’t get here fast enough. Even with Captain America: Civil WarDoctor Strange, and Deadpool due out this year, Suicide Squad just became my #1 anticipated comic book movie of 2016.

Head over to the DC Database to get up to speed with all the members of the Suicide Squad before they get contracted to come and take you out.
