We knew there was a big announcement coming regarding Marvel and now we know what it is. The comic book giant has teamed with Square Enix on a series of projects, the first being an Avengers game. Little is known about the game aside from the #reassemble hashtag and that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal are working on it with them and that it’s an entirely new story. Here’s the announcement trailer:

Is an entirely new Marvel gaming universe being created? It appears so, though the breadth and scope of it is a big question mark.

The creative firepower behind the project is substantial. Square Enix, Eidos Montreal, and Crystal Dynamics with games like Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts on their resume certainly create exciting possibilities. Some are speculating an open world game may be in the offing, but regardless, this is a marriage of heavyweights with a heavyweight franchise. More news can’t come fast enough.

Right now the creators are being very tight-lipped. It also appears there won’t be much more to learn about the project until next year if their official statement is any indicator:

The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.

The idea of a Marvel Games Universe that operates in a similar manner as their cinematic universe is exciting.

The levels of complexity and continual storytelling teases an experience that will deliver over a long period of time. If the films are an indicator, there’s practically no downtime between updates. The Avengers alone provide numerous storytelling avenues, but perhaps this arrangement could be the connective tissue for much more in the way of bringing Marvel’s extensive family closer.
