If you asked us what games we played back in the early days of the PlayStation One, Spyro the Dragon was near the top of that list. And now, it looks like Spyro and his scaly friends could be making a comeback in a Spyro the Dragon Remaster.
Over the weekend, the PlayStation Netherlands Facebook account posted an image showing a selection of PlayStation icons with the caption “and the 12 points to go”. Now, the post was for some reason in relation to the Eurovision Song Contest that happened on Saturday, but it’s the icons they’ve chosen that has piqued Reddit’s interest.
There’s Kratos from God of War, Parappa the Rapper, SackBoy from Little Big Planet, Kat from the Gravity Rush series and Crash Bandicoot, but there’s also Spyro the Dragon.
All of those characters have recently appeared on the PS4 – or are just about to in the case of Kratos and Crash – but not our favourite little purple dragon.
There have been rumours floating around the internet since 2014 suggesting a remaster of the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy is in the works. The iconic platformer did so well on the PS One that there were two sequels: Spyro the Dragon: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon. But we haven’t actually had a Spyro game since the year 2000.
The series was originally made by Insomniac Games and the original game’s commercial success is part of the reason the studio is where it is today. However, the rights to the franchise are now owned by Activision, who also now owns Crash Bandicoot and is responsible for that remastering too.
If Sony is planning to announce a Spyro the Dragon remaster at E3 2017 in June, PlayStation Netherland’s social team might have dropped the ball a little early.
PlayStation’s press conference is scheduled for June 12, so you haven’t got long to wait if it is true.
