The Ellcrys makes its first appearance in The Elfstones of Shannara, the second in Terry Brooks’ novel series and the inspiration for the first season of the show. In a post-nuclear holocaust future, the Four Lands have risen and become home to humans, trolls, dwarves, and elves. The Ellcrys traps demons in an alternate world and is cared for by elves (the Chosen). When it starts dying, a young trio — Wil (Austin Butler), a half-human/half-elf Healer; Amberle (Poppy Drayton), an elven princess and member of the Chosen; and Eretria (Ivana Baquero), a Rover — set off on a quest to restore both the Ellcrys and peace in the Four Lands.
Beyond magic and adventure, the story explores loyalty, identity, and destiny. It also features a cast that is as gorgeous as the show’s New Zealand landscapes.
The Shannara Chronicles is executive produced and written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Smallville), with Terry Brooks and Jon Favreau (all the Iron Man and Avengers films) also executive producing. The show has already been renewed for a second season (there are, after all, 26 book volumes to pull from). Until then, tide yourself over with the Season 1 DVD and its special features, which include:
- Behind the Scenes
- Meet the Characters
- Exploring New Zealand
- Terry Brooks interview
- Making of the Dagda Mor
