New horror film The Void pays tribute to John Carpenter, H.P. Lovecraft, Clive Barker and more with its take on visceral, alternate-dimension style horror.
Labelled a ‘cosmic horror’, the film revolves around the opening of a gateway to evil and unleashes a heap of disturbing, gory imagery on audiences. You can see one of these moments in the clip above, in which we see a nightmarish beast launch an attack on one of the characters, who is handcuffed to a hospital bed.
The plot centres on a decrepit hospital with a skeleton staff. One night, after a police officer brings in a patient all hell breaks loose. Literally.
A bloody, disfigured creature emerges, and it isn’t friendly. And it seems to be linked with the group of mysterious, hostile hooded figures surrounding the building. Those trapped inside can’t get out, and they must confront the threat that lurks within if they are to survive – but what they find shocks them to the core.
The film is reminiscent of films such as Hellraiser, The Thing, Reanimator and William A. Levey’s 1989 horror flick Hellgate and it’s written and directed by duo Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski, who have backgrounds in art direction and special make-up effects respectively.
If you’re wondering why the monster in the clip looks so good, there’s your answer. But it doesn’t stop there. The film is full of jaw-dropping special make-up effects and inventive sequences of pure horror. Between them, the pair have worked on films including Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, the upcoming It film, and Robocop and Total Recall remakes.
The film stars Ellen Wong, Aaron Poole, Daniel Fathers and veteran Twin Peaks actor Kenneth Welsh (he played Windom Earle in David Lynch’s cult series).
The Void is out now in UK cinemas and is released in the US on April 7.
