Sacred Lies is a new series on Facebook Watch. It’s based on the novel The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes, which was inspired by the Brothers Grimm story “The Handless Maiden.” Let’s take a closer look at the two lead characters in the show, Minnow Bly and Dr. Wilson.
Minnow Bly
Minnow Bly is a 17-year-old girl who’s spent the last 12 years of her life in a cult. Her entire family joined after her father was laid off from his factory job. They gave away all their possessions and went to live in the woods based on the teachings of a man known as The Prophet.
However, Minnow’s life changes forever when the cult is burned to the ground. She is arrested after an altercation and sent to a juvenile detention center. Minnow must now learn to protect herself and figure out who she can trust. She leans on her one friend, her cellmate, Angel, who teaches her all about life in juvie.
Minnow must also deal with the trauma of her past — as well as the loss of both her hands. People have a lot of questions about her life in the cult which brings up some painful memories. The most persistent is FBI psychologist Dr. Wilson, who is preoccupied with uncovering the truth about the cult.
Dr. Wilson
Dr. Wilson is a forensic psychologist who works for the FBI, specializing in cults and religiously motivated crimes. When Minnow Bly is brought to juvenile detention, Dr. Wilson meets with her to find out more about the cult and its leader, The Prophet. He’s trying to understand why 100 people walked into the woods and completely abandoned society.
Dr. Wilson is a thoughtful type. It’s his job to analyze people and figure out how they think. He’s drawn to Minnow and her quiet exterior which, he realizes, hides a dangerous streak. He wants answers from Minnow, but Minnow wants something from him as well.
Soon secrets from Dr. Wilson’s own past come to light. Who’s trying to stop his investigation? How can Minnow help him come to terms with his own past?
