Disney’s The BFG is the story of ten-year-old Sophie, who is whisked away from London to Giant Country. There she becomes fast friends with a Big Friendly Giant and learns that he is responsible for sending dreams to children. However, her presence is soon threatened by other man-eating giants. Together, the two race back to London to warn the Queen about the giants and to come up with a plan to stop them once and for all.

The movie is based on the book by imaginative author Roald Dahl. His works have a long tradition of being adapted for the big screen. You may have seen a few of them as they are extremely popular with children and adults alike. If you haven’t, here is a list of the other Roald Dahl movies that you need to see, or at least arrange for your kids to.

The Witches

Remember Anjelica Huston? She is known for playing Mortica Addams in The Addams Family. If you loved her in that movie, then you’ll get a kick out of her in The Witches. Huston is the Grand High Witch who convenes a witches convention in Norway. There she reveals her plan to turn children into mice by using a magical chocolate formula. Their test subject Luke manages to escape and devises a plan to stop the witches before they can cause harm to any other children.

Matilda

This was the first movie I ever watched that made reading seem cool. Matilda is about a very bright young girl who discovers that she can make things move with her mind. She uses her powers for good and helps exact revenge on Principal Trunchball, who makes life a living hell for her students at Crunchem Hall.

James and the Giant Peach

If you love stop-motion animated films like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, then you’ll def enjoy James and the Giant Peach. James runs away from a bad home situation with a group of bugs. They travel together to New York City in a giant peach.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is the movie that inspired the 2005 remake. Charlie is one of the lucky few to find a golden ticket in a Wonka Bar. This assures him a visit to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, where he meets the eccentric chocolatier and other ticket winners.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

George Clooney and Meryl Streep lend their voices to bring the characters in Fantastic Mr. Fox to life. Mr. Fox has settled into suburban life but falls back to burgling farms. This angers the local farmers who set up an ambush in order to get rid of the foxes for good.

Don’t forget to watch The BFG in theaters this Friday, July 1.
