Season 1 of The CW’s Riverdale featured some steamy love scenes with recurring gay character Kevin Keller (Casey Cott). Season 2, we learned today at San Diego Comic-Con, will further embrace LGBT themes. Cott’s being promoted to series regular as Kevin gets a boyfriend, and the show will introduce a prominent bisexual character from Archie Comics, Toni Topaz.

Toni Topaz will be played by Vanessa Morgan.

Morgan comes to Riverdale after recurring roles on MTV’s Finding Carter and The Shannara Chronicles. You may also recognize her from Disney Channel’s My Babysitter’s a Vampire although she’s now all grown up.

Riverdale’s version of Toni Topaz is a Southside Serpent who has a lot in common with Jughead. In fact, Topaz may come between Betty and Jughead in Season 2.

Betty and Jughead are going to hit a rough patch.

With Jughead at Southside, Betty will be leaning more heavily on Archie. Could “Varchie” be in trouble, too?

“Jughead’s eventually going to have to pick a side. Riverdale or the Serpents,” Jughead actor Cole Sprouse told the Ballroom 20 crowd.

“Bughead” will become Romeo and Juliet-esque — two lovers from different worlds. “Instead of Dark Betty, we’ll see more like ‘Tortured Soul Betty,'” Lili Reinhart explained.

Archie and Veronica will both be going dark.

In the wake of the attack on his father, Archie’s going through some things. “We’re going to see a whole new side of Archie,” said KJ Apa.

He’ll be looking to his girlfriend Veronica for more support, but Ronnie isn’t fully emotionally available. She’s dealing with her father’s return and her “bad boy” ex-boyfriend from New York shows up in Riverdale.

Season 2 will bring out Veronica’s darker side. “And ‘Dark Veronica’ is A LOT darker than ‘Dark Betty,'” Cami Mendes told fans.

But it’s not all bad for “Varchie.” The cast revealed that the steamiest scene of Riverdale Season 2 will be a hot moment between Veronica and Archie in the first episode.

Riverdale returns this fall with 22 episodes for Season 2.
