RimWorld is a colony survival simulator that challenges you to create a thriving colony out of nothing but a few people. The game is in early access and currently available on Steam. It has since undergone massive updates like the most recent Wanderlust update. On the surface, the game sounds simple, but RimWorld is quite complex as AI storytellers often end your colonist’s lives before you can save them.
What Makes RimWorld Different?
What sets RimWorld apart from other colony survival games is that you are not necessarily meant to win. AI storytellers choose encounters like Dungeon Masters in Dungeons and Dragons, and like Dungeon Masters, some are more forgiving than others. In RimWorld, there are four different storytellers, each with their own pros and cons. RimWorld is not impossible and not everything is against you, but survival, hunting, gathering, and construction are all important just like any other survival game. But because you are not necessarily meant to win, there are some things that you need to watch carefully.
Psychology is a unique aspect of RimWorld too. If you don’t take care of your colonist’s needs, it could cause problems later on, such as fights breaking out or causing damage to buildings. The game has a few other interesting features, like the ability to turn people into cyborgs with bionic limbs and implants.
The recent “Wanderlust” update has added new challenges and opportunities to building your colony. This new update lets you attack other factions and form caravans to trade for vital resources. This is all represented on a full 3D spherical planet. This may sound insignificant, but this is an important aspect to RimWorld because it is so new. Although the enemies at the bases seem excessive so far, that doesn’t mean that this new update isn’t any good. Wanderlust allows you to have multiple colonies, so if you ever wanted a Persian empire of your own, this would be the place to do it.
No one knows what the future holds for this game. Developers, Ludeon Studios, do not announce release dates ahead of time. This isn’t necessarily bad because it makes new updates a nice surprise for everyone. According to the studio, “Ludeon uses an iterative, evidence-based, dynamic development process that changes direction often. This is the best way to create the strongest game design, but it also means we have no way of knowing how the game will develop before it does.” What does this say about RimWorld? At the very least it shows how interesting RimWorld and its developers are. If RimWorld continues to develop so well then you can only imagine what it will look like by version 1.0, and you can be sure it won’t disappoint.
