Richard Kelly’s follow-up to Donnie Darko was Southland Tales – a film that split both critics and audiences alike. But it seems he isn’t done with the sprawling dystopian tale. Kelly has talked about shooting an animated prequel to the movie, and it sounds like it might just happen thanks to the current political climate.

“My biggest priority in my career is to try and finish the entire Southland Tales saga,” he told FANDOM. “So we’ll see what happens. It’s just about time and money. There’s a significant resurgence in interest in that film, because of everything that has happened in our political landscape. The madness of our political landscape.

“There’s a lot more interest so I’m very eager to finish the entire version and I would love to do the prequel, it’s just about getting the money together and getting started on it. That’s a ‘to be continued question’, but I am hopeful that we’ll get there.”

Southland Tales hit screens in 2006, starred Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake and Sean William Scott, and told the tale of America on the brink of disaster following a nuclear attack.
