Netflix is giving fans a sneak peek at the first 60 seconds of footage from Season 5 of Orange is the New Black.
And it looks pretty salty. The action begins precisely where we left off at the end of Season 4.
If you remember, the final episode of Season 4 closed with Daya aiming a gun at prison officer Thomas Humphrey’s head.
The camera shifts to an approaching Alex and Piper.
“We’re laying low, and we’re staying out of trouble,” says Piper.
“That’s right,” says Alex. “If this is trouble, we turn around and we walk the other way. We are out of the business.”
It’s at this point that they are suddenly aware that they’ve walked into trouble. Piper says, “Is this a real riot? This is a real riot. If this is a real riot, do you think this is a step forwards or backwards for equality?” she asks.
“I don’t care,” Alex says. “And we’re getting out of here now — come on.”
It cuts back to the first scene, with Daya and a baying crowd of prisoners surrounding her, egging her on. You can see the pressure is mounting on her and she asks everybody to be quiet. Eventually, the picture fades to black and the show logo appears before we hear a gunshot.
We don’t know who the gun was fired at, if anyone at all, so we’ll just have to watch to see the outcome of this scenario. We do know, however, that things remain heated.
The new season takes place in real time over the course of three days as the riot which began and escalated in Season 4 continues to have repercussions. According to a press release from Netflix, the lives of the inmates at Litchfield are “forever changed as they are emboldened to fight for redemption, resolution and the respect they deserve.”
