The upcoming Star Trek TV series, set to debut in January 2017, now has a showrunner. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) has been picked for the high-stakes job of bringing Trek back to its small-screen roots, EW reports.

Fuller is no stranger to Trek fans. From Memory Alpha:

He has worked on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager episodes, creating teleplays and doing writing as well as story work. He was also a regular staff member on Voyager beginning early in the fifth season as a story editor, becoming an executive story editor at the start of the sixth season, and a co-producer for the seventh season.

We don’t yet know any concrete details about the new series, but Fuller’s previous interviews on the subject may shed some light. In 2009, he told iF Magazine that he was pushing for a new Star Trek TV show with a throwback vibe. “I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude,” he said. “I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the ’60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin.”

Alex Kurtzman, Executive Producer of the new series, spoke to EW about Fuller. “Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” he said. “His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

The new Trek series was announced on StarTrek.com in November promising “new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

The show will premiere on CBS in January of next year, before making the network’s subscription-based streaming service its permanent home.
