A sneak-peek clip from Spider-Man: Homecoming premiered during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and revealed that Spidey is a massive Star Wars fan.

In the scene, we see him get busted by his friend, Ned, who is waiting patiently in Peter’s bedroom for his buddy to come in.
After Peter has entered through the window, as quiet as a mouse (or perhaps spider is a more apt simile – spiders are probably even quieter than mice tbh), silently clambered across the ceiling and carefully closed the door so as not to alert Aunt May, he turns around to see Ned sitting on the bottom bunk, incredulous.
Ned immediately drops a half-built Lego Death Star, which shatters on the floor. Neither of them cares, because SPIDER-MAN. When Ned tells us that he’s there waiting because they had a date to finish building the Death Star together, we’re like: “Cool!”. And then we’re all a bit disappointed that it’s now in pieces on the floor.

But what’s also cool when you look at the scene closely is that the Lego Death Star isn’t the only piece of Star Wars memorabilia in Peter’s bedroom.
As the camera moves across the room, you see an AT-AT spread-eagled on one shelf, and an X-wing displayed on a stand below it. There’s also an assortment of Star Wars action figures on another shelf, which look like R2-D2, Luke Skywalker in Tatooine gear, Ree Yees, Nien Nunb, a Tusken Raider and a Rebel Pilot. Who’d have thought that Star Wars would be a thing in the world of Marvel? Well, Disney clearly, since the company owns both brands.
Of course, in many ways, Spider-Man aka Peter Parker is just a teenager navigating the choppy waters of high school – and this reboot allows Marvel to exploit that, particularly since they’ve found that anchoring superheroes in the real world seems to help audiences engage. Think Peter Quill’s 1980s pop culture references in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and Deadpool’s fourth-wall breaking Wade Wilson.
Therefore, it makes sense to make Peter Parker even easier to identify with than he already is – he’s not just a geeky schoolboy, he’s a Star Wars fan, which speaks to most of us.
Plus, who doesn’t love an Easter Egg? We can’t wait to spot more when the film is released on July 7.
