Update: Doomfist, Overwatch’s latest hero has been officially been unveiled. The new Assault-class hero works for the villainous Talon organisation and he wields the eponymous cybernetic glove. He’s part of the group that includes Reaper, Widowmaker and Sombra – the latter being one of the newer characters along with Orisa.

Original Story: Blizzard presents us with a new “lore” teaser, but with subtle hints that mend together all the Overwatch questions we’ve been asking since February around the identity of the elusive Doomfist.

In an official Overwatch blogpost, an article in the fictional newspaper Times of Numbani has confirmed that one man, Akande Ogundimu – better known as Doomfist – has indeed broken free from the Helix Security International maximum security prison with a little help from the Talon organization.

The Attack on Numbani incident that led to the destruction of the OR15 robots and theft of the Doomfist gauntlet.

Blizzard has also hinted that there may be other escapees from the prison, and although none were named. Overwatch already has two heroes who have also gone by the alias of Doomfist, but neither by the name of Ogundimu. This implies that this Doomfist is the hitherto-unknown “Successor”.

An update on Blizzard’s Overwatch blog adds more detail into the strategic escape plan that released the dangerous Doomfist, and possibly others:

“It began in the early hours of the morning, when an unidentified aircraft approached the facility. Security initially reported that the craft had no passengers on board, based on radar scans. The craft passed through the range of the installation’s defense systems without incident, leading some to believe that Talon has moles within Helix. Video surveillance from within the compound revealed a black shadowy figure emerging from the craft and descending upon the prison grounds. The unidentified assailant easily overcame the Helix security agents, leaving over a dozen dead. Medical records of the casualties reveal injuries and cellular degeneration matching other incidents involving the mercenary known as the Reaper, all but confirming the incursion as a Talon attack.”

What will we expect soon?

Doomfist’s existence has been teased by Blizzard for a while now, and this teaser is the first confirmation that they’ve decided to ramp up Doomfist to a full reveal soon.

Considering the time that it took for other new characters, such as Sombra and Orisa to come to light, we’re all probably still a long way from seeing Doomfist in all his glory.
