According to the latest rumours, there could be a new Knights of the Old Republic or KOTOR as it’s affectionately called, in the works. Like most online rumours, it’s not 100% confirmed, but we’re excited nonetheless.
The gossip comes courtesy of industry insider Liam Robertson, who claims the new KOTOR title is in the works at BioWare Austin. That’s the same team that originally created the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.
Apparently, it’s only in the early stages of development, so don’t expect to hear anything officially yet. However, the info does come via Robertson’s anonymous sources who tend to have good info.
The rumour was revealed as part of Robertson’s Patreon-exclusive podcast, which was discovered by the guys over at The Star Wars Game Outpost (and reported by PC Gamer).
“I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future,” he said on the podcast. “What they’re currently working on right now – and I have this on good authority – is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic.
“I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now.”
Allegedly it’s less of a remake than a reboot, a bit like 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront to the 2004 original title. It might even embrace the new Star Wars canon.
“I don’t really know how that game will end up,” he said. “I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”
Supporting that rumour is the fact that Drew Karpyshyn, the senior writer on the original Knights of the Old Republic, left BioWare in 2012 but then returned in 2015. In late March he tweeted that he was working on a new game and set the internet tongues a-waggin’. He also revealed that he wasn’t working on Mass Effect: Andromeda, so what has he been working on?

Knights of the Old Republic was first released back in 2003 and is an RPG set in the Star Wars universe. It’s still widely regarded to be one of the best Star Wars games of all time.
