New ‘Independence Day’ Trailer is Bigger and Badder

Independence Day has gone down in American cinema history as one of the greatest disaster films ever made. It stands to reason that a sequel is going to feel compelled to up the ante in all new ways, and if the new trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence is any indication, director Roland Emmerich has gone all in. Watch this insanity below:

There are a few moments that gave me the most minor of winces (“They like to go after the landmarks,” is a meta joke I could have done without), but what has me excited is how bananas this whole endeavor looks. The level of destruction has been upped to a ridiculous degree, and I can’t wait to watch it unfold on the biggest screen possible. From a writing standpoint, I really dig how the world of Independence Day has obviously adopted the alien technology into their society. With alien life out in the open, it makes sense that the world would take advantage of this advanced tech for everyday purposes. I’m also a big fan of seeing new monsters in this universe, and that giant beastie that we catch a glimpse of near the end of this trailer has me pumped.

I’m still a little hazy on some character stuff — I thought Brent Spiner’s scientist died? — but I’m not expecting this to be Shakespeare; as long as the actors are visibly having fun (which Jeff Goldblum is), I’m up for another mindless bit of fun in this world. I’m hoping that Bill Pullman’s character doesn’t get the short shrift since this trailer gives off the impression he’s not going to be around for an Independence Day 3. I love Bill Pullman and I love his beard even more.

Independence Day: Resurgence destroys all the landmarks on June 24. We’re gonna need a bigger planet.
