Jeff Nichols has already made himself a filmmaker to follow. Take Shelter and Mud are both two sides of a very interesting coin but ever since it was announced Midnight Special seemed to be the filmmaker’s next step towards reaching the masses. The people that have seen the film say that it evokes many of the same qualities and notions that have made Starman and Close Encounters of the Third Kind such timeless genre films.

Here’s the latest trailer:

The cast is phenomenal. Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Joel Edgerton, and Sam Shepard are just the big names involved and Nichols has shown a real gift at directing younger actors. What’s intriguing is that Nichols embraces subtlety and is more interested in the drama that comes out of the extraordinary events rather than the events themselves. In a year where Independence Day is returning to theaters it’s nice to see “possibly” an alien movie that recalls the late 70’s and early 80’s.

The wait is almost over but the smart money is that Midnight Special is going to be a film on many a list at the end of the year.

Now watch the first trailer and see just how much mileage the filmmakers get from tension and performance rather than spectacle. This is how you cut a trailer:
