Christopher Guest is a comedy legend. His involvement in This Is Spinal Tap alone would warrant such a claim, but Guest has gone on to direct some of the funniest films ever made. Waiting for GuffmanBest in Show and A Mighty Wind are all hilarious mockumentaries. Guest shines when he lets his actors improvise within the confines of a ridiculous premise. Well, it looks like he’s going to get the opportunity to do that once again.

Mascots is the new Christopher Guest film that takes a look at a silly event and the people who take it seriously. This time, it’s a competition for sports mascots. Check out the brief trailer:

The setup sounds pitch perfect for Guest’s brand of irreverent, oblivious humor. Plus, the costumes all look appropriately goofy. It’ll be fun seeing how sincere these characters are about dressing up as absurd mascots and winning an equally absurd award. Speaking of the costumes, take a look at these beauties:

The cast includes a murderers’ row of comedic talent: Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jr., Christopher Moynihan, Don Lake, Brad Williams, Zach Woods, Chris O’Dowd, Susan Yeagley, Sarah Baker, Tom Bennett, Kerry Godliman, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge, Michael Hitchcock, Maria Blasucci, John Michael Higgins, and Jim Piddock.

Mascots will release on Netflix October 13. If you feel like you’re going to need a good laugh, this will be a safe bet. Christopher Guest’s work, no matter how minor, is always enjoyably funny. No doubt that Mascots will continue that tradition. Is it too much to hope for a cameo from Nigel Tufnel? Maybe Spinal Tap plays the fight song for one of the competing schools? It’s a long shot, but it can’t hurt to put that possibility out into the universe. Keeping our drumsticks crossed until then.
