Making a Murderer is one of the most powerful and shocking documentaries in recent memory. It has captured the public consciousness in a big way. It is one of Netflix’s most talked about and controversial original series. Events of the case have been playing out since the series wrapped up its first season. Because life doesn’t stop when the cameras turn off. News today broke about an enormous shift in the case. It’s something that will almost certainly change the next season. In fact, it will probably be one of season two’s biggest moments.

Brendan Dassey, the nephew of Steven Avery, has been granted an official release. Dassey has spent his entire adult life in the prison system. He was 16 years old when he was arrested for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Brendan is now 27. He spent over a decade convicted for a crime he did not do. There are quite a lot of conditions to his release but this is still a huge victory. The interrogation tapes shown in Making a Murderer clearly demonstrate how Brendan was coerced into a confession. The documentary sparked tons of controversy over how Dassey was treated by the acting police officers. His participation in the investigation was a key element to convicting Steven Avery. His release could very well signal a turn in Avery’s case.

Justice for the Innocent

Making a Murderer is a necessary watch for any true crime fan. Heck, anyone interested in the criminal justice system needs to see it. The stories of Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey, and the many others in their life are heartbreaking. The incredible miscarriage of justice is sobering and infuriating. Hopefully, this new twist in the story will lead to some kind of justice. The Avery family sorely needs some in their life. Brendan’s release is a step in the right direction.

Avery is also seeking an appeal and hopes that Making a Murderer has helped his cause. Dassey’s release is due to be covered in detail in the show’s second season. The Netflix series does not have a return date scheduled. Viewers definitely want to be updated on this ever-changing drama and so do we. Could Steven Avery get released? Chances look better with each passing day and this turn of events is a huge help. Regardless, this makes the second season unmissable. We’ll keep you posted with any further developments.
