When Ben Affleck isn’t slipping into a pair of tights to play Daredevil or Batman, he makes movies like Live By Night. Affleck has written and directed a few movies now, and Live By Night continues to show how talented the actor is becoming behind the camera.

Live By Night, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, tells the story of Joe Coughlin. As the son of a police captain, Joe finds himself drawn to the world of organized crime. You can expect a typical gangster story from there. However, if the trailer is any indication, it seems like this is going to be a familiar story told in a fantastic way. Check it out and see what you think.

As you can see, Affleck continues to have a solid handle on his directing style. He already proved he can handle period pieces with the engaging Argo. This new film certainly offers a more flamboyant era for Affleck to play with. Not to mention some serious gun play. The shootouts we see in this trailer look like they are going to be some of the most exciting Affleck has directed. It doesn’t hurt that he has an incredible cast to work with. Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Brenden Gleeson, Titus Welliver, and Chris Cooper are all somewhere in this thing! Affleck is definitely attracting more and more talent to his pictures.

Warner Bros. has been a good home for Affleck; the studio is home to both Live By Night and the upcoming The Accountant. And let’s not forget that whole DC Extended Universe deal. Hopefully, he’ll continue to prosper there. Warner Bros. has always been a studio that allows its creative team a lot of freedom. Affleck seems to be someone who makes the best use of the leeway he’s given.

Live By Night hits theaters on January 13. Check out the typical blue and orange poster below.
