It has been rumored for quite some time that Kurt Russell would be joining the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and today’s official announcement makes it… well, official. Marvel put out a press release that confirms Snake Plissken himself will be showing up in the next installment of the intergalactic adventure series. Marvel also released a great promo image showing off the silhouettes of our favorite space-faring rapscallions:

The whole rock band setup works perfectly for these characters, and it looks like Groot won’t have grown a whole bunch since we last saw him getting his groove on at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s very exciting to think about Groot and Drax palling around in the sequel, seeing as how their personalities seem like perfect comic foils for each other.

But, back to the big news item: who is Kurt Russell playing? It’s practically been confirmed — though not officially from Marvel — that Russell will be portraying the father of Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord. Exactly who that character is, we don’t know yet. No matter what character Russell is playing, it’s pretty fantastic that the man who brought Jack Burton and Captain Ron is going to play Chris Pratt’s dad. It’s such perfect casting that it seems to good to be true. It also helps that Russell has thrown himself back into the acting game in a great way, giving great performances last year in Bone Tomahawk and The Hateful Eight. There’s no reason to doubt that he’ll be excellent in this.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will infect your theater screens — and almost certainly your playlists — on May 5. 2017.
