After a mighty and long seven years on the air, the final season of The Vampire Diaries will air later this year. Scheduled for the fall line-up, the eighth season will premiere on October 21. We’ve learned quite a bit about what’s in store, so here’s what we know so far about The Vampire Diaries’ eighth and final season.

The Episodes

After much confusion and a lot of fans getting their hopes up, The CW announced that season eight would be the final and would only have 16 episodes. Sixteen! It’s the last season, and we’re only getting 16 episodes when every other season has had a full run of 22 episodes?

Executive producers, Plec and Narducci, have released the names of the first three episodes: “Hello Brother,” “Today Will Be Different,” and “You Decided I Was Worth Saving.” Sound familiar? Well, they should! Plec announced that each episode title from season eight would be a line of dialogue from the show’s first season. This, in my opinion, is the best direction the show could go in terms of production. The episode titles will remind viewers why they fell in love with the show in the first place, back when The Vampire Diaries first aired in 2009.

The Characters

Will we finally get to see Elena again?

One thing that fans should be excited for — I know I definitely am! — is the character line-up for season eight. Since Nina Dobrev’s departure in the season six finale, every fan has been wondering “will we see Elena again?” Good news is, we may see Elena again. Dobrev confirmed in an interview earlier this year that she would be willing to return for the finale to “end [her] character on a happy note.” Plec later confirmed that there are plans for Dobrev to return.

There are currently plans for nine other previous characters to return. So far, characters that have been confirmed to return are Tyler Lockwood, Jeremy Gilbert, and Sherrif Elizabeth Forbes. That leaves space for six more to come back. I’m hoping that Katherine is one of them. It has also been revealed that during the season, one main character will die. Yes, death! And without the Other Side, they’ll be dead for good — thanks for that Bonnie!

Last month, we had a chat with executive producer Julie Plec at San Diego Comic-Con. Check out what she had to say about The Vampire Diaries’ final season.
