In 2006, Disney debuted updates to their classic Pirates of the Caribbean theme park attraction inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The big change to the ride was the addition of an animatronic Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp’s character from the films. On Wednesday, lucky visitors got to see another very special addition to the ride: The animatronic version was replaced with the REAL LIFE Johnny Depp in costume and performing for riders as Captain Jack!

Depp surprised riders, prompting a flood of surprised starstruck reactions — not to mention streaming tears of regret from fans who missed it. Check ’em out, mateys…

Depp’s surprise Disneyland appearance is part of the promotional push for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, setting sail in theaters on May 26.

Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth film in the franchise which thrusts the irreverent swashbuckler into an all-new adventure. The winds of ill-fortune blow even more strongly for Captain Jack as deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.
