HarmonQuest is the most enjoyable take on Dungeons & Dragons role-playing in recent memory. The animated game is a silly blast of fun that actually crafts a good story along the way. A lot of that has to do with the comedic guest stars such as Aubrey Plaza, Thomas Middleditch, Kumail Nanjiani, John Hodgman, Nathan Fillion, and many others. The show has been a hit with fans but its future has been uncertain for various reasons.

Well, today put those fears to rest. HarmonQuest has been renewed for a second season. The role-playing comedy will air its second season sometime in 2017. If you haven’t seen the show, check out the first episode for free right here!

There’s an unfortunate elephant in the room that has to be brought up. Creator Dan Harmon and co-star Erin McGathy divorced in October of last year. Does this mean that McGathy won’t return for season two? Will the show have to write out her character? It will be a shame to lose her comedic perspective and outrageous in-game antics. Hopefully, something constructive will happen on that front.

Otherwise, this is news worth celebrating. Nothing else has made me as excited about tabletop role-playing like HarmonQuest has. The show is a great example of the fun and lunacy that a good RPG session can create. The curse of rule-obsessed game masters and impenetrable statistics has haunted tabletop gaming forever. HarmonQuest does a lot to remove those stereotypes and get to the core of what makes this kind of gaming fun. It’s also a celebration of imagination and improvisation. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that next season can snag some stellar guest stars.

No word yet on when HarmonQuest will return, but we’ll certainly stay on top of this news. In the meantime, you should check out the show on NBC’s streaming platform Seeso. If you need another fictionalized take on Dungeons & Dragons type gaming, check out the underappreciated indie film, Zero Charisma. Here’s a clip with one teeny bit of NSFW language.
