Why don’t we already have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in front of our eyeballs? James Gunn‘s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is easily the best entry in the series. So, it stands to reason that anticipation for the sequel is at a fever pitch. Fans are itching to catch a glimpse at the new film. Thankfully, here’s something to whet your appetite.

Gunn has shared a piece of concept art that was revealed in the newest edition of Empire. Feast your eyes on this cavalcade of awesome:

Holy tentacled terrors! If there was any doubt about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 holding back on the craziness, this should dispel such a worry. Look at that thing! It looks like the telepod amalgamation of a graboid‘s mouth and a hengrauggi. It’s like a rathtar‘s red-headed stepchild.

It’s good to know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 won’t be resting on its laurels. The original film felt like a classic space adventure but still comfortably fit into Marvel’s superhero mold. Hopefully, Gunn will use the immense success of the first film to catapult these characters and their universe into bigger and more bizarre places. This concept art seems to be proof of that.

Between the casting of Kurt Russell and this sneak peek, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has become one of the most anticipated blockbuster movies in recent memory. It’s been great to see such obscure characters get their moment in the sun. If Marvel can keep pushing offbeat brands like Guardians of the Galaxy, then their cinematic experiment will continue to yield fantastic results.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will challenge us to a dance-off on May 5, 2017. Prepare to be inundated with tiny Groot merch. That little guy is going to be an adorable little star.
