Vin Diesel, voice of Groot, delivered this piece of news to a live audience. It confirms what most people could’ve guessed. The huge film in which both teams fight Thanos is what the MCU has built up to all along. Furthermore, it was hinted throughout Guardians of the Galaxy that they’d fight Thanos eventually. While Thanos was first hinted at in The Avengers, Guardians established the lore more. It explained the Infinity Stones, and showed far more of his character. It also gave a sense of what the stakes were, as well as Gamora and Drax‘s motivation to kill him.
While details are sparse, there are a couple things to look out for. And we can expect, with how the MCU works, that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will give us some hints. We know that there are six Infinity Stones, but only four have been found so far. The Guardians are likely to chase a fifth, and it’s possible that Thor chases a sixth in Thor: Ragnarok. The question then will be, how does Thanos take them all for his Infinity Gauntlet? And what are the Guardians doing on Earth? Peter Quill may want to avoid going home, but he’d have no choice if Thanos is about to destroy it.
Will it work or make the movie too crowded?
What we do know is it’ll be interesting to see the Guardians and the Avengers meet. The Guardians are hilarious on their own, and their egos clashing with the Avengers would be hilarious to watch. Knowing Marvel, it’d probably start in a fight scene before they work together. Also, the Guardians may be a bigger team by that point depending on Vol. 2, as it had more members in the comics.
I still have mixed feelings. On the one hand, a film stuffed with so many characters will be hard to follow. Captain America: Civil War didn’t have half as many characters, and I imagine it must’ve been hard for a latecomer fan. But I’m extremely hyped for anything involving the Guardians. That same part of me is really curious what’ll happen if they meet. I’m confident because Marvel’s dialog has been spot on so far, and I really want to see Rocket Raccoon and Tony Stark fight. And both Drax and Gamora really do have a score to settle with Thanos, they badly deserve their revenge.
Avengers: Infinity War releases May 4, 2018. Before that, Guardians Vol. 2 releases May 5, 2017.
