Game of Thrones is about to return to television screens and its creator, George R.R. Martin, may have let slip a huge SPOILER ahead of the season seven premiere.

Speaking with Time, Martin discussed the character of Beric Dondarrion and it sounds like his resurrections are going to be an important story point moving forward:

“[P]oor Beric Dondarrion, who was set up as the foreshadowing of all this, every time he’s a little less Beric. His memories are fading, he’s got all these scars, he’s becoming more and more physically hideous, because he’s not a living human being anymore. His heart isn’t beating, his blood isn’t flowing in his veins, he’s a wight, but a wight animated by fire instead of by ice, now we’re getting back to the whole fire and ice thing.”

Fire Wights Are a Thing?!?

Ice wights have been present since the first episode

We’ve only seen wights in the show that are aligned with the White Walkers. The idea of fire wights is completely new. But, this actually makes a lot of sense. A wight is a reanimated corpse. Beric has been reanimated multiple times. Not to mention Jon Snow, who could very well be the reincarnation of Azor Ahai. Now that we know fire wights are a thing, Azor Ahai certainly sounds like one.

This would also make the inevitable confrontation between Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and the White Walkers make lots of thematic sense. Both Jon and Dany would now represent fire and the White Walkers ice. Seems like we’ll be learning quite a bit about this concept as Game of Thrones‘ seventh season gets underway. Tell me you aren’t pumped for the idea of a fire and ice wight battle?

Expect some big reveals like this to drop sooner rather than later. The show is racing towards its endgame. We’re about to find out all of this and more.
