He is the Night King, leader of the White Walkers, and presumably the big baddie for the show’s final season. His visage has been on all the Game of Thrones Season 7 promotional materials.
Although he’s only been featured in five previous episodes, the Night King and his army of White Walkers and wights represent a threat far bigger than any single noble house.
Even Jon Snow recognizes the danger, calling that the Night King is the true enemy.
“The war is not over. And I promise you friend, the true enemy won’t wait out the storm. He brings the storm,” the King of the North declared in the Season 6 finale, The Winds of Winter.
The Night King first appeared in Season 4, but his origin was explained in Season 6. He was created by Leaf to protect the Children of the Forest from the invading First Men. He transformed from a man into the first White Walker after his chest was pierced by a shard of dragonglass.
So, will the Night King reign in Season 7?
During a vision, Bran Stark was grabbed by the Night King. Through that connection, the King discerned Bran’s whereabouts and sent his forces against him. Only through the sacrifices of Leaf and Hodor did Bran narrowly escape.
Assuming that the Night King can still tap into the connection, Bran remains unsafe, even as he goes south of The Wall.
Time reporter Daniel D’Addario recently visited the Game of Thrones set where a massive battle was filmed. Sworn to secrecy, D’Addario teased the sheer scope of the battle will “melt” the internet.
He’s hinted that it is scene where Jon Snow and his aunt Daenerys Targaryen will meet, but will they face each other, or the Night King?
One thing is clear: Winter is here, and so is the Night King.
