Pink is the color of all things sweet, romantic, demure, and feminine. After all, girls are made of sugar, spice, and everything nice — wait, spice? Spice isn’t demure or sweet. It’s bold, in-your-face, and packs a punch.

All girls are made with spice, but some girls seem to have gotten an extra dose. They’re bold, and they’re always challenging the status quo. These girls are willing to punch, kick, and fight for the people and ideas they cherish. Pink is too demure and tame for these mold-breakers. What color do these ladies of action identify with? Green for “go,” of course.

In honor of the Powerpuff Girls’ 20th anniversary, we start our list with the Powerpuff Girl whose secret ingredient is spice and favorite color is green.

Buttercup

Knocked down into the mud, Buttercup, covered in mud, wipes her eyes and looks defiantly up at her target.
Buttercup doesn't mind getting dirty, but getting her to take a bath later will be challenging.

Professor Utonium creates the Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup when he combines sugar, spice, everything nice, and Chemical X. Chemical X gives the girls superpowers that they use to defend the city of Townsville, USA. Each girl embodies one of the ingredients in the Professor’s formula, and Buttercup’s ingredient is spice.

Buttercup is the toughest Powerpuff girl. She’s passionate, courageous, and will always choose action over inaction. She never quits and when her sisters lose heart, and Buttercup’s strength and determination keep the team focused and often save the day. When Buttercup realizes her bad-boy crush, Ace of the Gangreen Gang, is using her feelings for him to wreak havoc, she teaches him not to play with a girl’s heart using some power punches.

Gamora

Green-skinned Gamora with fuschia-colored hair smirks at the camera.
This green assassin is known as the deadliest woman in the galaxy.

Gamora Zen Whoberi Ben Titan has many incarnations in Marvel Comic Books, but every version is a bold green warrior. Our favorite Gamora is Zoe Saldana’s portrayal in the MCU‘s Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Avengers: Infinity War. This sword-wielding fighter’s strength comes from her enhanced physical traits, assassin training, and independent spirit. Gamora stands up for what she believes in.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, the strength and sincerity of Gamora’s convictions and actions sway the team to protect Xandar and the Orb by working with the Nova Corps. She bravely defies and tries to stop her foster father, Thanos, and his warped mission to bring balance to the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Her unswerving moral compass is the heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Jade

Jade seems to be sleeping as she recovers her powers surrounded by green light.
It's not easy being green.

Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, also known as Jade, is Earth’s first female Green Lantern. The daughter of Alan Scott, the original Lantern, and Thorn, Jade possesses Scott’s Green Lantern energy powers without using a ring and inherits Thorn’s control over flora. Willpower and endurance power Jade’s energy construct that she uses to enhance her agility and defense or make a giant sledgehammer.

She has defended the galaxy with the Green Lantern Corps., Justice League, Infinity Inc., and served as leader of the Outsiders. Jade has gone toe-to-toe with Obsidian and Starheart and held her own next to Batman and Superman. Like all the green girls, Jade is a fierce fighter defending the people she believes in.

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy looks lovingly at a mutated plant she's developed in a lab, behind her Swamp Thing is getting pumped.
Ivy shows her tender side as she cuddles a plant.

Passionate about defending those without a voice, Poison Ivy, aka Pamela Lillian Isley, is the guardian of plants, orphans, and Harley Quinn. She uses her ability to create hypnotizing pheromones and to control and mutate plants. Her goals are to protect the environment and amass wealth to fund green sanctuaries. When supervillains carve Gotham into individual kingdoms, Poison Ivy chooses to shelter and protect young orphans in her garden realm. She encourages Harley Quinn to value herself and end her abusive and obsessive relationship with the Joker.

Like the other green girls on the list, she takes action instead of sitting on the sidelines. Her actions are sometimes homicidal, but Poison Ivy’s desire to protect the defenseless, challenge the status quo, and define herself makes her a green power girl.

Lady Jaye

Lady Jaye leading an assault on a Cobra Fortress. Above her an aerial battle lights up the night sky.
Always in the middle of the action with the right accessory. Like an explosive spear.

Alison R. Hart-Burnett, codenamed Lady Jaye, is a counterintelligence officer specializing in covert operations for G.I. Joe. With her wide variety of army training, Lady Jaye could make an impact from the safety of Joe headquarters, but this fierce female prefers the front line fighting side-by-side with her fellow Joes.

Because of her ability to analyze a person or situation quickly and accurately, she’s valued as an undercover agent and entrusted with training and assessing new Joes. Lady Jaye likes to be in the thick of things. Her choice of standard-issue green fatigues and her seemingly endless array of various spears (think Batman’s utility belt) reflect her down-to-earth, hard-fighting attitude.

She-Hulk

The She-Hulk sitting on a bench that has an advertisement for her alter-ego Jennifer Walters' law firm.
The She-Hulk endorsing Jennifer Walters' law firm.

Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk, is a green triple threat: brains, beauty, and brawn. She obtained her hulk powers through a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Unlike Banner’s Hulk, Walters’ She-Hulk keeps her civilian personality and intelligence intact, creating a wise-cracking, fourth-wall-smashing, girl-powered Hulk. Combat trained by Captain America and Gamora, She-Hulk has the strength and ability to be deadly but chooses to subdue her foes.

Walters and She-Hulk have a passion for defending the marginalized and defenseless — Walters as a defense lawyer and She-Hulk as a member of the Avengers and other super teams. When given a choice between her personas, Walters decides the best version of herself is green.
