Director J.A. Bayona has been talking about the ending of his summer smash Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and how it sets things up for the forthcoming Jurassic World 3.

Speaking to FANDOM’s Matt Donato on the eve of Fallen Kingdom‘s September 18 Blu-ray release, Bayona discusses the evolution of the franchise, and why bigger might not necessarily be better for the third installment.

The Jurassic World Saga is Evolving

Bayona: “We need to think about where everything started, and it was in the imagination of Michael Crichton. Even when he was doing fantasy, he kept himself very grounded in reality. He was using real scientific theories when he wrote Jurassic Park. I think that somehow the saga is going to be evolving into ideas we’ve never seen before, but I’m sure they’re going to keep the whole idea of Jurassic World grounded.

“That’s very challenging, what [director] Colin [Trevorrow] is doing in the third movie… the chances are incredible.

“I really like the feeling you have at the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It’s the perfect cliffhanger for the third movie.

“I think what’s interesting is the fact that it’s an open ending. We’re not fixing the world. That’s what’s interesting about doing the second episode. You don’t need to fix the world, you can complicate the world and not face repercussions.”

Keeping Jurassic World Grounded

Bayona: “It’s very tricky when you work in this kind of context. Everyone will think about making it bigger, more spectacular — you need to deliver that to the audience — but at the same time, I think that somehow Michael Crichton would like to keep the whole world grounded in our reality.

“Everyone tries to think about it as bigger, and bigger, and bigger. I think in the smaller situations is where you can see yourself more reflected. There’s plenty of things happening right now in the world you can somehow talk about using dinosaurs.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is now available on Digital and arrives on Blu-ray September 18.
