Another year brings another war and this time EA is stepping up to the plate with Battlefield V. From the first trailer back in May we saw all sorts of carnage on the battlefield. FANDOM got a chance to go behind closed doors and check out the new Grand Operations mode for Battlefield V.

Grand Operations mode takes place over multiple days with the assaulting team needing to take over multiple objectives before running out of tickets. Attackers can paratroop into the battlefield behind enemy lines but can also be shot out of the sky, by the defending team. If all objectives are taken on the first day then leftover tickets will be added to the starting total on the following day.

If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It

It was apparent from the start that EA knew what was working with Battlefield 1 and wanted to continue to build upon that. After a brief introductory scene about the battle, we were given the option between the four classes that all Battlefield fans will be familiar with. Assault, Medic, Support, and Recon are all back, and each classes kit matches what you’d expect.

Assaults have assault rifles and grenades, Medics have rifles and syringes to revive allies, Supports carry ammo kits, and Recons have their trusty sniper rifles and flare guns. Nothing about the base classes was groundbreaking, but each one felt distinctive enough to separate it from the others.

Where Battlefield V is trying to expand is in the archetypes within each class. While we only had access to the alternate support class that had an LMG and other kit items, it added a considerable amount of variety to the Support class.

Based on what we saw, each of the four base classes will have multiple archetypes that will most likely be unlocked as you rank up in multiplayer. Or, possibly as purchasable similar to the various weapons in Battlefield 1. We enjoyed our first taste and can’t wait to see the other options the team at EA cooks up.

Who Needs a Medic Anyways?

In case your Medics and Supports are dead or just aren’t doing their jobs of healing/resupplying you, Battlefield V has added resupply crates at designated locations on the map for health and ammunition. These are essential locations and teams will want to make sure to protect them as their value can be tremendous if played around correctly.

There’s a strong emphasis on the squad in this game, but there are ways to look after yourself as well — such as scavenging bits of ammunition from dead soldiers.

An Upgrade You Say?

Battlefield games have always been known for their use of vehicles, and Battlefield V surely doesn’t disappoint here. Tanks are back and just as destructive as ever. One of the new significant additions is the ability to attach AA guns and certain other armaments.

This can be used to great effect to reinforce specific areas of the map and is especially helpful if your squad notices that the opposing force is putting pressure somewhere else.

Speaking of reinforcement, everyone can build at designated points on the map it’s very similar to repairing vehicles as a support unit from Battlefield 1.

On PC, it was as simple as pressing ‘T’ to bring up the hammer, and transparent white objects would appear everywhere we could build. During the stages we played, we were able to place sandbags, make impromptu barricades out of snow, and board up windows to fortify buildings.

During pre-roll videos explaining the building system, it also stated that barbed wire is available, so only time will tell what other fortifications we will be able to build.

Overall, we enjoyed our time with the Grand Operations mode of Battlefield V. The game is gorgeous just like we expected after the initial trailer, and the various colors and details in the environment pop.

Although the only map we got access to was Narvik, the snow effects were strong enough to add to the scenery — but not so strong as to affect the outcome of firefights. We barely got our toes wet with Battlefield V, but it was enough to appeal to our inner WW2 needs. We look forward to seeing more as time progresses towards its October 19th launch.
